We are excited to introduce a new blog that will invite readers to follow our journey in creating our production of A Man of No Importance. Since the earliest days of We The People Theatre, we have consistently brought compelling stories to the stage. Our mission has been to inspire conversations within the community. We focus on topics that are important to all of us.
In an ironic twist of fate, our company was founded right after Donald Trump was elected in 2016. At that time, our country was very polarized, and many people were struggling to hear different points of view. Our first production was the award-winning musical, 1776, which tells the story of our Founding Fathers and the drafting of the Declaration of Independence. This story highlights the compromises needed to draft the Declaration, which has guided our democracy for many years. We chose 1776 because it shone a light on the heroic efforts that our Founders had to exert for the democracy we enjoy today.
Our next production tells a story about family, friendship and acceptance. It is set in
Dublin in 1964, at a time when the Catholic Church dictated what was
acceptable behavior and beliefs. It was a nearly impossible time to be considered
different or "other". But the lively characters in the play come together through an
amateur theatre troupe and build a family. That's kind of like what We The People Theatre does every year as well.
This blog will invite you inside our production. We hope to have some of our actors
and designers share their experiences with you. And we hope this will be one of the
places where we inspire meaningful conversations.
Buckle Up!
