After one of our shows this past weekend, someone standing on the porch turned to me and asked, “Where do you find these people?”
They were talking about the extraordinary talent on stage—the consistently strong voices, the grounded, honest acting, the kind of presence that makes you lean in a little closer. It’s a question I get a lot.
My answer is always the same: there’s a lot of talent in the world.
And there really is. Even—especially—in our little corner of Vermont.
This cast is a beautiful mix of people from all walks of life. Among them are a carpenter, an IT professional, a psychiatrist, an artist, a hospital administrator, a nonprofit program manager, and an HR professional. By day, they are deeply engaged in their respective fields. By night (and weekends), they come together to make theatre.
Our director, Richard Waterhouse, teaches acting at Brown University, and our Associate Director, Amanda Rafuse, brings her experience as a teaching artist working with students into the rehearsal room. Together, they help shape a space where both seasoned performers and newer voices can do their best work.
These are hard-working, dedicated theatre artists, and we are lucky to have them.
One of the great joys of We the People Theatre is that many actors return to us year after year. At the same time, each production brings new faces into the fold, expanding what feels very much like a family.
Take Maggie Finley, who plays Percy in The Spitfire Grill. Maggie grew up in the area and has appeared on numerous stages throughout the Upper Valley. She first met Producing Artistic Director Perry Allison when she played Mary Lennox in The Secret Garden, a production Perry directed in 2016. Nearly ten years later, they find themselves reunited for this production.
It’s a small world—in theatre and in life.
And if you ask me, that’s part of what makes it so special.
